Dr. Azad Moopen
The physician who grew a single Bur Dubai clinic into Aster DM Healthcare, one of the Gulf’s largest hospital networks.
Dr. Azad Moopen, a gold-medallist physician from Malappuram in Kerala and a former medical-college lecturer, founded Aster DM Healthcare in 1987 as a single-doctor clinic in a modest Bur Dubai apartment. Over nearly four decades he built it into one of the region’s largest integrated healthcare groups — spanning hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and diagnostics across the GCC and India, a network reported in the hundreds of facilities.
The company listed its Indian business on the stock market in 2018, and in 2023-24 separated its Gulf and India operations, with a Fajr Capital-led consortium taking a majority of the GCC business while Moopen retained a significant stake and operational leadership. He also helped establish the MIMS hospital in Kozhikode in 2001.
Moopen holds India’s Padma Shri (2011) and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman (2010), and is known for medical-education and philanthropic initiatives. His daughter, Alisha Moopen, is managing director and group chief executive of the GCC business.
