Ram Buxani
The community elder who arrived in Dubai in 1959 as a young clerk and rose to lead the Cosmos ITL Group.
Ram Buxani arrived in Dubai in 1959 as a young clerk at International Traders Ltd and, over a career spanning more than six decades, rose to chair the Cosmos ITL Group, with interests in consumer electronics, IT, real estate and trading. His life story — from a family displaced by the 1947 Partition to a leading Gulf businessman — made him one of the best-known figures of Dubai’s Indian settler community.
A prominent community elder, Buxani was a founding figure of the India Club in Dubai and a long-serving leader of diaspora institutions, as well as the author of the memoir “Taking the High Road.” He was recognised with an honorary doctorate from D.Y. Patil University and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Forbes Middle East in 2017.
Buxani died in Dubai in July 2024 at the age of 83, mourned by community and diplomatic figures as a mentor and role model. He is remembered as a pioneer who helped shape Dubai’s Indian business community over more than sixty years.
