Sunny Varkey

The Dubai-based education entrepreneur behind GEMS Education and the million-dollar Global Teacher Prize.

Sunny Varkey’s family moved to Dubai in 1959 and opened Our Own English High School in 1968; he took over its running in 1980, when it had fewer than 400 students. From that foundation he built GEMS Education, launched in 2000, into one of the world’s largest private K-12 school operators, with a network of schools across the UAE and beyond educating well over a hundred thousand students.

Through the Varkey Foundation, established in 2010, he created the annual one-million-dollar Global Teacher Prize — awarded in Dubai from 2015 to raise the status of teaching — along with the Global Student Prize and the Global Education and Skills Forum. In 2015 he became the first education entrepreneur to sign the Giving Pledge, committing at least half his wealth to philanthropy.

Varkey has received India’s Padma Shri (2009) and served as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. His family remains central to GEMS, with sons Dino and Jay in senior leadership, and the group is a fixture of private education in the Gulf.
