Thumbay Moideen

The entrepreneur invited by Ajman’s rulers to found the UAE’s first private medical university.

Thumbay Moideen was, in 1997, the first expatriate invited by the ruling family of Ajman to establish a private medical college in the UAE — a venture then without precedent for a non-Emirati. The institution opened in 1998 and became Gulf Medical University, gaining full university status in 2008, with Moideen building a teaching hospital to train its students.

He leads the diversified Thumbay Group, headquartered in Dubai, which spans healthcare, education and allied sectors. Its Thumbay Medicity in Ajman is anchored by a large academic hospital, and the group reports a workforce of several thousand and millions of patient visits over the years, drawn from many nationalities.

Moideen is widely recognised as a pioneer of private medical education in the Emirates, and members of his family hold senior roles across the group’s healthcare and operating businesses. He remains founder and president of the Thumbay Group and Gulf Medical University.
